thankful turkey card craft

Thanksgiving is a wonderful time to reflect on the blessings in our lives and put focus on gratitude.

We are pleased to bring you this Thanksgiving craft that reinforces positive parenting by instilling gratitude and encouraging kids to be kind.

This simple yet adorable craft gives you and your children a chance to discuss, write down and meditate on a few of the many things you are grateful for.

In addition, because it is a card, it creates an opportunity to show kindness to others and let them know just how thankful you are for them in a lovely way.

Whether it’s given to a favorite teacher, best friend or family member, the thoughtful gesture (especially because it is handmade with love and gratitude) is sure to make any recipient feel very special!

color
Have your child(ren) color in the turkey character and letters on the printout.

cut
If your child is able to wield safety scissors (or in the process of working on their fine motor skills) encourage them to cut out each of the 3 images on the page.

If they are too small or unable to cut for themselves, offer to help them out and cut the pieces after they are done coloring.

trace
Take the shape labeled PATTERN for the turkey feathers and have your child trace it onto various colors of construction paper. Cut out as many as you’d like, but 5 is a good minimum. To save time and cut many feathers at once, either stack multiple colors or accordion fold a sheet of construction paper.

fold
Have your child choose any color sheet of construction paper they’d like for their card and fold it in half.

glue
Starting with the center feather, glue each feather fanned behind the turkey. Glue the turkey on the front side of the card and the “…and YOU!” image to the inside of the folded card.

write
Discuss and have your child write something they are thankful for in each of the feathers. If your child is not yet old enough to write, take this opportunity to chat about all of the things your little one is grateful for and write for them.

finishing touch
Don’t forget to have your child sign the card. A handprint is even a great option for tiny tots! No ink pad? Non-toxic washable markers work just fine for handprints.

We hope you and your little ones enjoy doing this craft! But even more than that, take joy in making someone’s Thanksgiving extra special!
